When I was in high school, I came across my first art teacher who seemed to fit what I now think of as that classic art teacher style. Her white hair had an asymmetrical cut, she wore lots of black turtlenecks and flowing skirts, and she was always making her own statement jewelry from paper, clay beads and wooden blocks. I was immediately taken with her and knew that one day, I wanted to be her. Now, whenever I see someone with statement jewelry, I’m instantly taken back to that 9th grade classroom and wanting to borrow all of our teacher’s amazing sculptural jewelry. I may not have my own collection of great art jewelry yet, but I’m keeping my eyes on that talented community of artists and designers and am excited to share one of my favorites today.
Heejoo Kim is based in Korea, where she studied and went to school for jewelry design and metalsmithing and it’s where she now runs her own fine art jewelry studio, creating beautiful pieces inspired by nature. I will never grow tired of artwork influenced by the natural world, so her sculptural rings and brooches will always be interesting to me. I love the way Heejoo interprets plants and their stems with delicate line work on top of metal and other materials. That mix of 2D and 3D techniques makes each piece more intriguing to me.
